Most of what is known as Black Galaxy Amethyst comes from Uruguay and Brazil in the form of clusters or geodes and is considered very rare. Like all types of Amethyst, Black Galaxy Amethyst is a variety of quartz, meaning it is a silica based crystal, with hematite and iron inclusions in the Amethyst. Black Galaxy Amethyst appears black at first glance, but it can also be a very dark purple or even carry a violet undertone in the black, rather than just a matte black.
